Millions to project cooperation between Umeå University and FOI
Posted: January 8, 2010
European CBRNE Center at Umeå University has been granted its largest EU financed research project so far – close to 20 million Swedish kronor. The Center will, together with the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) list suggestions of support actions, dealing with incidents with chemical and radioactive substances, to the European Union’s Committee for health security.
The actual work consists of mapping European laboratories that handles chemicals and radioactive substances and to evaluate the technical and scientific competence of these laboratories. Eventually the mapping will result in the creation of a network of expertise within the area. Furthermore a book of guidelines will be put together, and this together with the network will in the future assist with knowledge and methods for effective and accurate procedures in case of incidents with chemicals or radioactive substances in Europe. The aim is that there should be neither doubt nor hindrance when it comes to priority order and action plan when/if an incident occurs.
The project will start during the spring of 2010 and last for three years. The Project Managers are Dzenan Gino Sahovic, Director of European CBRNE Center, and Ola Claesson, FOI.
– The project is very important for the CBRNE Center at Umeå University and for the Swedish Defence Research Agency. The network is expected to become a platform for future cooperation in large EU projects in the area, says Dzenan Gino Sahovic.
Finances: Executive Agency for Health and Consumers (EAHC).
